The Answer

I have a very long answer for why I've been neglecting my little space of the internet so long but that will have to wait for another day and another post. Instead of being concerned as to whether anyone is reading or growing my following I've decided to go back to the roots of my blog where I posted a mix of creative work, outfits and music videos (new and old) I'd share with my opinions, so here we are.

Jamie Lawson is someone I discovered in October 2014 prior to him having a record deal. He had known Ed Sheeran from the folk circuit way back when and Ed asked him on a whim to support his support act at Manchester Arena, less than a year later Jamie had a number one single and a record deal with Gingerbread Records.

This is the first single from his third album (well third album he's released as a signed artist?) and he may not have grown to the global success of Sheeran but his music is from deep in his soul and you can hear that throughout every lyric. I took my dad to his tour back in 2016 for his first album and my dad said it was bit depressing (which some of the songs can be and yes I've now had at least a few tears each time I've seen him live)

I'm going to leave you with the opening verse because yeah. Just listen.

If I ask too many questions
It's cause I can't quite comprehend
How my soul's in your possession
How in the world it all makes sense
Is there any explanation
How you're always in my head
Why does my heart beat irregular rhythm
Could it be the touch that your hands keep giving

Your love this the answer.

Dress: Collectif Clothing. Bag:Vintage, thrifted. Hair flowers: H&M.

All images by Antony Cartwright.

A few weeks ago when all the glorious weather started (I'm getting sick of it now but come August when I'm away I'll miss the sunshine!) I went to one of my favourite vintage fairs. Vintage Village at Stockport, I believe it's usually the second Sunday of each month. Anyway if you're into vintage/retro finds its a must particularly if you don't live to far away. Because I'm so cool I always go with my folks. this time I didn't actually find anything myself to buy but my dad quite often does!

Whenever we go I always try to pull out the more retro side of my personal style and because it's summer I finally broke out this dress I picked up in the Huge 50% off everything sale Collectif do a few times a year. (here's hoping it's about time for another one as I have a few things on my wishlist!)  I've had to alter it to fit me better but I expect that because I'm an awkward shape. It was warm that day so I thought it would be best to have my hair off my face but it had been so long since I did victory rolls on my own head I have to admit they aren't my best work! I'm also still surprised that I had any curl left in my hair when these photos were taken! Antony saw me with my folks and asked my dad if he could take my photograph because I was dressed up! My dad couldn't stop laughing seeing as I'm 25 now and you know what I'm glad Antony got some snaps for me because otherwise I wouldn't have any photos to show of the last time I looked half decent! However it has been so long since anyone took my photo I have to say I was more than a little rusty which is why my expression is bit resting bitch face!

Evita! - Endellion Theatre Company April 2018

At the end of March I started working on Endellion's production of Evita which took place in a church (the scale of staging was insane, I have never seen anything quite like it!) A vast majority of the costumes had arrived prior to me joining the team due to prior commitments and illness on my part. It was indeed a crazy few weeks with a lot of tears and self doubt but I came out the other side having learnt a lot about myself and what I can handle. I also made some amazing friends from backstage crew to the fabulous cast we had, I was extremely lucky to work with so many talented people in one place and mostly ones that were on the same wave length as me.

My title for this job was Costume Supervisor and I worked on the menswear department.

Below a selection of the wonderful men who I was in charge of! Full uniforms hired from Flame Costumiers half military a mixture of Loft Costume Hire and sourced braces and granddad shirts by me. The womens department was full of pretty dresses, all the accessories you can imagine and some fabulous hat but I have to admit I love working with a group of guys probably because I'm the least ladylike person imaginable and just get stuck in.

Wig setting not done by me! Done by the amazing John Cumberlidge who is the reason I got into theatrical wig work! However I was his assistant from 5.30pm until 7pm each show night to wrap the ladies hair in preparation for wigs after this I would then style the hair of the female cast who weren't wearing wigs and also set some of the mens as well!

Wrap Dress with Shorts - Simply Be.

I've been lusting over this since I first saw it at the beginning of May and naturally when I decide throw caution to the wind (and my poor bank account) to treat myself for my Birthday it's sold out in the 2 sizes I fluctuate between. For most people that would be the end of that but for me I'm hoping to set aside a little bit of 'me' sewing time to knock up a fabulous 2 piece inspired by this!

It won't be in the same colour way or probably even the same shape, perks of patterning and drafting your own designs is having blocks in a true plus size at your disposal! I do have a lovely fabric in mind for this that is waiting on my unit shelf to be made into something perfect and summery!

If you could make the one garment of clothing you'd love what would it be?

Where Have I Been?

It feels strange to be sat back down writing again... well writing something that isn't updating my portfolio for work.

I've kind of lost my way with A Rose Like This something I once loved more than anything had to take a back seat while I decided what I wanted to try and do with my career and my brain. The end of 2017 was full of highs and lows, the lowest being loosing Patch my lovely and grumpy little Jack Russell I inherited from a neighbour who passed away in January 2017 and if I'm honest I've never gotten over it. The high was landing a job that was perfect for me granted it was only for a month run (Perils of having to be freelance!) but getting to show what I can really do when it comes to costume, in particular Pantomimes and being appreciated for the work I was putting in was a wonderful feeling. One I hope I get the chance to do again in the future as we all know Panto is my shit.

January 2018 was straight out of one Pantomime production into another then a scattering of smaller projects such as custom costumes and backstage work in my local theatre until a large production of Evita in Yorkshire In a church which took over my life from the end of March until the end of April. It all came together in the end but in that kind situation I'm always clinging on for dear life and questioning my own ability (it's a long story I don't fancy typing up to be on the Internet forever but if you follow me on Instagram at the time you'll have definitely seen my mini breakdowns)

As of May 2018 I went into a youth production of Wind and the Willows and have kind of been treading water ever since, waiting for my next move. I'm constantly questioning whether to keep pushing my Costume Dressing career or just give up, so far I'm still attempting to keep that afloat. I haven't wanted to blog because I'm not wearing the fun clothes I once did and I spend weeks at a time wearing all black (like my soul) covered in safety pins and you're lucky if I even get to brush my hair sometimes. I've also not really been looking after myself and this is something that needs to change, part of my self care used to be updating A Rose Like This but now it is more just wallowing!

I'm not saying I'm back to regular posting or that the posts will be like they were before. Maybe I'll show you more of my work as that is what I spend most of my time doing or maybe my self confidence will be back to wear it was and I'll be posting sassy AF swimwear and lingerie posts again (something I really want to do as they helped me so much at the time)

If you couldn't guess from the photos the production was Cinderella and there were one or two hella quick changes!

Lady in Red - RI Plus.

Dress: c/o River Island. Belt (worn as hairband) c/o Boohoo. Clutch Bag (old) Next. Shoes: Bought on Holiday.

Seeing as Party Season is slowly creeping upon us I thought now would be a good time to share this beautiful red dress with you all. Even though I took these photos when it wasn't quite so chilly! This is the kind of dress that I'd lust over in a shop and on other people but never dare to think I could carry off myself so when River Island gave me the opportunity on the Curve Fashion Festival bloggers day to choose something I KNEW I had to go with this little number!

I sized up to a UK22 so it wouldn't cling as much as I'm still yet to find the perfect shape wear for me but this does look absolutely killer clinging to a girls curves just at the time I was having bit of a confidence wobble (still am tbh) so I wasn't feeling brave enough to size down! I'm really hoping I get invited to some fabulous festive party or something so I can show this off as it is the perfect party dress! I decided to style it up with sparkly accessories and some seriously glam make up! The belt worn in my hair I picked up at the bloggers day as well from Boohoo, it also looks really cute on the waist as it's intended use but I couldn't resist popping it in my hair to jazz up my tighter curled vintage inspired hair!

I know my posts have been extremely sporadic over the last several months but I'm trying to keep posting as I love it so much! I'm currently in the middle of costumes for a show and I just finished on another as wig dresser so lets just say my life is rather up in the air at the moment!

Tankini: C/O Viva Voluptuous. Kimono: Yours (old). Sunglasses: Specspost. Hair flower: Pin Up Curl. Sandals: Simply Be (old).

I'm back with my first swimwear post of the year! Usually I've had quite a number by now but due to my hiatus unfortunately this could be the only one but what beautiful pieces to show you! I was lucky enough to be sent this Tankini from Viva Voluptuous, I normally prefer a bikini or full suit but I actually really love this.  I am wearing the bottoms in a UK20 and they fit well without digging in or riding up, something I particularly like about Viva is that the Tankini and Bikini cups come in cup sizes and for plus size women that is often need a little support up top! I'm wearing the 38DD here and they are quite generous and I fit in well without spillage and as they are not padded cups I was concerned about the cups wrinkling as my chest isn't full at the top but that wasn't an issue at all. Another concern I had that I shouldn't have worried about was whether the Tankini part over my stomach would be tight as my tummy is larger than my back but it fitted well without clinging to any areas I'd rather it didn't. Viva Voluptuous currently have a sale on the swimwear so I'd grab a fabulous bargain while you can!

I decided to style this up in my go to retro style and my hair flower from Pin Up Curl couldn't have matched any better. I decided to change from my usual red lip for a fun candy pink which I think I'll have to pull out more as it's nice for a change! Overall I'm so impressed with Viva Voluptuous and I definitely have my eye on a few pieces of there lingerie for myself.

Delta Swan Border Swing Dress: c/o Lindy Bop. Belt: Vintage. Bolero: Asda. Hair Flower: Pin Up Curl. Shoes: Shop in Southwold (unfortunately now closed down!) Glasses: Red or Dead from Specsavers. Bag: Accessorize.

I'm back! I know it is quite a shock I've been planning on getting my blog back to how it used to be for awhile but unfortunately 2016 has been shit for me and my Mental Health hasn't let me feel like I could in all honesty.

But what is better for a comeback than this BEAUTIFUL Delta dress Lindy Bop were kind enough to send me for review. I've always had a soft spot for Lindy Bop and lately they've upped there game even more! This print is killing it for me, when I first started dressing more to my vintage side border prints were just not available in my size and the colours in this one are just to die for! This dress is also not lined which I actually prefer in a swing dress so I don't end up with static when I wear a petticoat under the skirt. Here I'm wearing a size 22 which is what I always order with reproduction or vintage style brands as I often find that they run a little small. My only issues with this dress were that I need to pop a few tacks in the underarm as it gapes a little (something that happens in basically all dresses I wear that are sleeveless) and I find the dress quite long in the body but popping my favourite belt on solved that issue easily! I am honestly so impressed with this dress and feel really lovely in it. I also love that it has pockets! We ALL love a dress with pockets that is for sure!

I decided to style it up with my vintage favourites and my hair was so amazing thanks to Jess at I love Lucie Hair Parlour in Stockport. I got my hair cut there just before I took these photos and it's honestly one of my favourite cuts particularly as my curls hold much better now thanks to the horseshoe vintage cut which was done. If you're a vintage gal I cannot recommend them enough!

Lindy Bop currently have an End of Summer Sale on so I'd definitely recommend grabbing a bargain while you can!

Accidental Hiatus...

Hey.... do you remember me? I know it's been one hell of a while but I may be away a little longer.
Try not to miss me too much my Instagram is still updated almost daily, I've just had a lot on since January and something had to give.

That and I super last minute got the chance to be a Wardrobe Supervisor for a production in Leeds which means along with my other job I'm travelling around the country looking at costumes etc. This ends on July 11th and I'm hoping then things will slow down a little more so I can get back to my little space on the Internet (but knowing my life it'll probably end up being even more hectic!)

I still love A Rose Like This and feel so much guilt that I've not been able to update anything like I once did but I haven't gone... and I will be back!

Unleash - Dear Scantilly

Unleash set by Dear Scantilly (via Curvy Kate). Glasses from Specsavers. Hair Flower by Pin Up Curl.

Before I ramble further I just want to say the only editing on these photos is altering the light as I took these in my studio space and the lighting sucks there even at the best times of day! I'm going to try and not to ramble on this post but I probably still will! If you've been following my blog since the start (god help you!) you'll have seen how I've changed as a person which is something I love about running A Rose Like This for so long. These type of images are something I'd never think I'd be posting in the future back then but you know what I fucking love them. Are they perfect, no? Do I wish there was perfect lighting and I could pose like a professional, maybe but you know what this is me and where I am at this point in my life. Almost 24 and pretty much accepting my body as it is because hell it's the only one I'll ever have. Sure sometimes I think it would be easier if I wasn't fat but doesn't everyone feel like that sometimes? So here I am my size 20 body, cellulite, wobbly bits and all.

If you haven't tried any lingerie from Dear Scantilly you seriously need to. this set and another half cup bra from them I own make me feel like I could take on the world! Even if I'm just wearing really boring clothes over them! I'm wearing a 38E as I do with any Curvy Kate products and it fits well and more inportantly the band is comfortable to wear. I also love these high waist bottoms which have a cute cut out on the back, I actually ordered the largest size they do and could have easily sized down!

A Vacation in Sicily.

Sicily is an island located in the southern part of Italy known to be a Mediterranean gem. Despite the branding it has received due to its controversial past, the region maintains itself as one of the most beautiful places to visit in the area. This multi-cultural place offers a mixture of Greek, Roman, Spanish and Arab influences, making it diverse, unique and simply amazing. There is so much to explore in Sicily – archaeological ruins, historical information, tasty cuisine, endless beaches and breath-taking landscapes.

It might be a part of Italy but it is a unique place worth spending a vacation. Sicily has so much to offer in every direction. Every town, every coast, every countryside has a story to tell, ensuring anybody a holiday to remember. In fact, many people visit its shores all-year round, making it packed with holiday-goers during peak season. However, if you want to have the best time exploring and experiencing authentic Sicilian culture, it is best to consult companies such as WishSicily for well-appointed and furnished houses or villas to rent in Sicily.

There are a lot of different kinds of places to see in Sicily, a lot. Below are some of the top places worth visiting for an educationally exciting vacation.

1. Palermo
Being the capital of the region, Palermo is a bustling city of color and life. From morning till night, there is always some activity to tickle the senses. The place is full of historical and archaeological sites such as Baroque churches and buildings. As you go around the city, passing through beautiful piazzas and tight alleys, you will get to appreciate the hustle and bustle that makes the city. Visit the open-air markets of La Vucciria and Baccaro, for example. There is a huge variety of goods but don’t bypass the foods that are sold there. In addition, don’t miss visiting some of the many museums such as the Museo Archeologico Regionale Antonio Salinas to see one of the most interesting exhibits of Greek and Punic art in Italy. If you are into food and wine, there are plenty of cooking classes and wine tasting tours as well. You can learn how to prepare some of the favorite Sicilian dishes and learn which wine goes well with each dish.

2. Taormina
One of the most picturesque and therefore, most-visited towns in Sicily, Taormina is definitely a place worth a stop. With a dreamy climate and perfect position, it offers an amazing itinerary for a true Sicilian vacation. This hilltop town is world-famous for its well-preserved Greek- Roman Theatre that is also a beautiful vantage point to take appreciate the scenery of the Ionian Sea and Mt. Etna.

It is a city infused with poetic beauty as can be witnessed in the lovely gardens, squares and streets. Not far away, visitors can for for evening walks near the beaches of Giardini Naxos or Isola Bella. The luxury, the romantic atmosphere and the refinement that can be found here makes it all worth it.

3. Agrigento You can’t leave Sicily without visiting the Valley of the Temples located in Agrigento. This ancient Greek colony that used to be part of the Magna Graecia offers a fascinating peek into the once powerful and luxurious lifestyle of ancient people. The Valley of the Temples is known to be one of the most amazing examples of art, architecture and influences from the ancient Greek era.

After exploring the area of the Valley of the Temples, make a side trip to the Scala dei Turchi for a less-crowded beach experience. You can sunbathe, swim or climb the rocks. The white rocky cliffs make an amazing background for shooting photographs to capture moments of your Sicilian adventure.

4. Aeolian Islands
Not so far from the main island is a group of islands known as the Aeolian Islands. A ferry ride or a boat ride will allow you to go island-hopping across the different spots to experience the beauty each has to offer. This volcanic archipelago allows you to go fishing, scuba diving, beach hopping, swimming or soaking in thermal baths. You can climb Stromboli, catch a spectacular sunset or watch the “Sciarra del Fuoco” – lava flowing from Stromboli into the sea.

5. Mt. Etna
For those who love adventure, climbing Mt. Etna is a must. There are many companies that organize hikes up to the summit. Only licensed professional guides are allowed to accompany visitors to the top. The scenery from the top is simply breath-taking, one worth seeing, indeed. During winter, some snow activities are also possible. On the other hand, Mt. Etna is a place where some of the best wines of the region are produced. There are many wine tours organized in the area, accompanied with cooking classes or wine-tasting. It would be a satisfying experience to learn about Sicily’s sacred mountain and produce that come from there.

Sicily is a place worth visiting from January to December. It is a perfect place that can provide activities that cater to visitors during the different seasons. Whether it’s swimming in crystal-clear waters, climbing a volcano, or enjoying the food, Sicily is always open to those who have the interest to visit its shores.

Current Favourites - Very.

I've decided to start doing some Favourite posts again as I do an awful lot of window shopping online! I'm currently lusting over anything that's slouchy comfort, Structured looks and my go to vintage aesthetic and for me Very have something for each of these. Anything with a lipstick on it gets my vote and the striped top would be perfect for layering in the cold weather at the moment but would also be cute with just leggings and converse whenever we get spring weather! I also can't resist a cute print or a good old slogan tee! Speaking of print the sliced floral print on the midi dress keeps it interesting but also a simply shape and style, I have a few weddings coming up over 2017 and this dress would be fabulous!

Are you lusting over anything lovely from Very.co.uk? I've also spotted a few concession brands on there that I'm definitely going to keep an eye on including Girls on Film

Velvet Dream.

Dress: Evans (c/o House of Fraser) Shoes: Next. Clutch: Evans.

This is a long awaited party outfit post I meant to get up over Christmas but due to lots of last minute drastic changes in the pantomime I do costumes for and unfortunately a neighbour I was very close to (Patches owner) passing away. This is the first time I've been able to sit down to write. The lovely team over at House of Fraser gave me the option to choose an item from there Evans selection on the site and I just couldn't stop going back to this beautiful velvet number! The camera doesn't pick up how beautiful it is, you can wear it on or off the shoulder and has an utterly lovely almost peplum like frill on the chest which is also part of the sleeves and back. This means it gives you a little coverage on your arms if you feel a little insecure about them, which I do with my own sometimes!

I'm wearing a UK size 20 which is my usual go to, I always find Evans clothing is pretty true to size meaning I don't have to worry so much about what size I would need. Another thing I love about Evans is the wide fit options in footwear and you can also buy these from House of Fraser as well. The perfect one stop shop! If I'm looking for occasion wear in plus sizes HOF is my go to as they also stock the fabulous Studio 8 which have the MOST beautiful dresses! I decided to keep this pretty simple but perfect for the part season with a sequin clutch and my sparkly flatforms. I did something a little different with my hair and curled it away off my face, I wasn't sure how I'd feel about it but I love my hair like this!

House of Fraser currently have some fab pieces from Evans Clothing in their sale at the moment! As well as a whole host of other plus size pieces! The dress above is now sold out on HOF but is still available at Evans in limited sizes.

Books and Boots.

Boots: c/o   . Skirt: Joanie Clothing. Scarf: Dorothy Perkins. Top: Primark.

This post is all about boots! Now as a plus size women I've always struggled finding any wide calf boots to fit my chunky little legs and it's so often that the selection in stores that offer wide fit shoes often don't think about the increase in calf size. This is where The Wide Calf Boot Store comes into play. They have a wonderful range of boots in different Calf sizes, all you have to do is measure your calf at home and type in your shoe size and calf measurement into the site and that's it! I believe my calf measurement was roughly an XL in their size chart and I have to admit they fit like an absolute dream on my legs. I've always wanted some boots like this to wear with my vintage dresses and skirts come winter but I'd never found something classic and timeless in style but I'm happy to say now I have. These boots also have a slight heel it's probably less than half an inch but it's enough so you don't feel too flat footed (if that makes sense at all!)

Now these boots don't come cheap but for quality and something that will last more than a year or so I'd say it's an investment, My only downfall with these boots is that as well as my wide calves I also have wide feet and these were a touch narrow when they fit arrived but now I've worn them in they are much more comfortable! I decided to style these up with this adorable skirt from Joanie Clothing who are fast becoming my favourite brand at the moment. They have the perfect mix of vintage inspired pieces but everyday wearability, I am so in love with them and there will be a huge post about them very soon! Then another recent favourite being roll neck/polo neck jumpers something I used to hate wearing but this year they've just been a life saver to keep the chill at bay!

Ps. I now kind of have a dog... if you follow me on Instagram you'll have met Patch before! She is my neighbours pooch who I walk everyday anyway but due to him being unwell long term, Patch is now living with me and my family, she's a 15 year old Rescue Jack Russell and can be a pain but she also has very cute moments like here she was curious as to what I was doing outside so decided to join in on the photoshoot!

Fashion Industry: What It’s Really Like & How To Get In.

The dream of working in the fashion industry often includes a glamorous lifestyle and finally being let in on the secret on how to walk in heels. Admittedly, sometimes the ladder seems to be reason enough to consider a new job search.

In reality, the fashion industry is extremely competitive with a side of perks. To stay afloat and relevant, each fashion company is required to mix business with creativity, and is often backed by thousands of people running a million miles a minute to make that happen. Though watching The Devil Wears Prada does give some insight (and nerves) into what a day to day in the industry could look like, there are also many options for those who may prefer, let us say, a different approach to fashion.

For those who work directly with products, such as designers, stylists and models, the main focus is on creating products, and making them work perfectly. But that also means long hours, little sleep, and constantly working towards the next fashion show. To be in this side of fashion, you must be exceptionally comfortable with the words ‘vision’ and ‘texture’.

Then there are those with the understanding of how to make current trends work in store and with the instincts for future trend forecasting. An empty store off-hours, for example, is the perfect place for a visual merchandiser to work with trends, let the creativity flow, and put together pieces for window arrangements. For assistant and senior buyers, instincts are key as they attend trade shows and predict which pieces and trends will be popular for the following seasons.

Fashion companies also largely depend on the support of those who hold positions that are not fashion-specific. For example, one can be a store manager, personal assistant, social media assistant, or account coordinator. Therefore, for those who may have the dream to work in fashion, but may not have thought they had the qualifications to do so, there are many paths to choose from to get your foot in the door. The best way to break into the industry is leveraging what makes you competitive in combination with a committed job search. Below are a few tips to help with those first steps.

Review your skills. What makes you competitive? Is there a class you can take to help you become more knowledgeable on a specific topic? Could your previous freelance work help you get a freelance job at a fashion company?

Use job search engines. There are several accredited job search engines like Jobrapido that can save you time and help you match your preferences with job openings in Manchester, a city that is becoming UK's second most fashionable city. Apply, follow up, and regularly check on the job offers coming in!

Research positions that interest you. Learn the titles, descriptions, and qualifications for positions that interest you the most.

Network. Reach out to your current network and meet new people in the industry. Go to those meet and greets; you never know what connections you could make.

Natural Curves Classic Girdle.

Girdle: c/o Natural Curves. Dress: Forever 21 (bought from Nancy) Beret: Primark.

Hello I'm back with another post for you all! This one has also been waiting awhile to be written and I can only apologise but at least I'm here now and going to tell you about my first ever Girdle! As you may notice from my style over the last year I've been showing my vintage style more and more. It's something I've always loved but I just didn't feel like I could wear it all the time but now it makes me happy to dress up more so I do. I've been thinking about trying a girdle with some hold ups for awhile so when Natural Curves emailed me to ask if I'd like to try something from them I just new as soon as I saw the Classic Open Bottom Girdle by Ulla Dessous that it was just my cup of tea.

Here I'm wearing the 3X which is labelled on the site as a UK20 and it fits well much better than I thought it would. As a novice I thought I'd really struggle using the belts and attaching them to the hold ups (I couldn't find mine when I wanted to take photos so I cut up some old tights for them!) There is 3 buckles on each side which hold them up enough but if you were more heavily into the vintage scene and jive danced you'd potentially need something more hardcore but for me 3 straps are perfect. Another thing I liked about this girdle is it held me in a little without cutting into my stomach and becoming uncomfortable. I've had suspender belts in the past that were honestly useless for anyone plus size but this one by Natural Curves is fab! As it was pretty chilly outside I layer with this adorable printed dress and roll neck top. This look is my more everyday vintage style but I can't wait to wear this girdle when I really go full vintage glam over Christmas!

As we all know plus size lingerie can be a nightmare to find and Natural Curve offer many styles up to a UK Dress Size 34! It's also pretty rare to find classic high quality lingerie and shape wear that's larger sizes fit so well and these do! You can check out there full collections on the site here.
